G20 roundup of a different sort

From a TC indymedia pal who just returned from Pittsburgh. Thus concludes my coverage of the G20. Maybe.

The G20 in Pittsburgh is over, but much like the RNC, the aftermath is just beginning.  This is a quick roundup of the first stories about the resistance and accompanying militarization of Pittsburgh from Twin Cities folks (including myself) who were there.  There were many successful actions by both anarchists and permitted groups, and the city of Pittsburgh - particularly the University - certainly is forever changed.  But, with many (like myself) having left, Pittsburghers still need help cleaning up after the police state and spreading their voices.

A short list of things you can to do to help now:

  • Forward these reports/videos/stories to people you know; post on facebook/myspace/etc
  • Call Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl @ 412 255 2626
  • Organize for economic justice and against police brutality in your community

A quick legal status note: There were about 170 arrests in total, mostly from un-announced nighttime actions around the U of Pitt, with many students swept up. One arrested Twin Cities Indymedia volunteer, Melissa Hill, was released relatively quickly but her great footage was stolen.  You can watch an interview with her by Nigel Parry @ IndyPGH.org.  Another mediamaker from Blaine, Nathan Monkelien, is still in jail as of this writing.  He currently has five charges, including two felonies.
